Why OSHC is important?

The cost of outpatient medical treatment, prescriptions, ambulance services and, hospitalization can be very expensive in Down Under. To have a peace of mind, international students, including accompanying dependents, are required to purchase the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of their studies.

Students can subscribe to the compulsory minimum coverage or the comprehensive products. The minimum plan provide coverage for a general practitioner’s consultation, outpatient hospital treatment, or for limited prescription drugs. It is important to contact each OSHC provider to ensure that you get the coverage you need, based on individual budget.

The five providers are AHM, Allianz Global, BUPA Australia, Medibank Australia, and NIB. Students can self-arrange or purchase through their education provider.

Care and attention should be exercised about waiting periods, deductibles, exclusions, and other limitations on the plan. The OSHC plans do not cover pre-existing medical ailment and sickness. Dental, optical or physiotherapy services are also excluded. Students should consider purchasing additional private health insurance or travel insurance to supplement their needs.
