Australia’s contribution to economic activity in ICT sector

Analysis of the ICT sector’s contribution to economic activity finds that Australia ranks number 7 out of 13 countries9, with our ICT sector representing around 4.5% of total industry value add in 2015 (OECD, 2017a; ABS, 2017b and IBISWorld, 2018).

The definition of the ICT sector can vary across countries, including a mix of ICT goods (e.g. the manufacturing of computers and communications equipment) and services (e.g. software publishing and information services) (ITU, 2007).

A country with substantial ICT economic activity can experience positive spillovers with respect to digitizing other industries and, depending on the relative strengths of the country, may set the “global tech standard” in what digital development looks like (The Economist, 2018).
